Harmonautica (Bloodfunk)

Eric Blood: Bass and Vocals
Josh Francis: Keyboard and Trumpet
Jimmy Hendricks: Guitar
Tim Funk: Drums and Cajon

After first moving to Utah from Canada, I got a job at Musicians Friend.  If they paid me enough, or if I had enough money to where I didn’t care, I could work there forever.  While working there I met a great guy named Josh Francis who asked if I wanted to jam with him and his bass player friend named Eric Blood.  Little did I know when I was jamming with them, I was really auditioning as their drummer for a trio they wanted to put together.  Needless to say, they liked me and I had the great opportunity to play with these musicians.

In this band I felt like I had surpassed my drumming abilities from where I was after I had left pdex.  We spent a long time practicing the most complex songs I have ever come across.  I was stretched past basic rock or even most jazz I had ever played.  In this group I was experimenting and it was fun.

Honestly though, I was out of my league and these guys were more capable musicians than myself. Later on, we became a quartet and started playing with a talented guitarist named Jimmy Hendricks.  It was a great time, but I really only had time to play during the summer, while school was a lot less demanding.  In the end Jimmy left for California and I eventually moved off to Seattle.

Eric and Josh are still playing together today and are now called Bloodfunk.  They still sound amazing and you can check them out here.

Recordings

This was a live recording at the Tahitian Noni headquarters.  One of my favorite songs was Pyramid which shows how complex our songs really were.  Pyramid goes from a 7/8 to a 9/8 section in the head (written more like a jazz tune) then ends in a crazy way where we keep adding on a beat until we end in a 7 beat pattern.  Hence yelling “seven” at the end since we wrote this song counting out loud for the ending.
